Walking in Durer’s Shoes
This sculpture is my attempt to express the complex and often clumsy experience of being an artist.
The first time I saw Albrecht Durer’s Rhinoceros print, I was struck by how similar his experience may have been to my own. He had never actually seen a rhinoceros, but was nonetheless willing to take the knowledge he did have to make something extraordinary.
While I strive to create work in the shadow of Durer’s excellence, I often think about what I do not know, how I can use what I have learned and how clumsy I feel balancing on primitive drawing skills, looking for the elusive power to reveal this thing called humanity that only great art can communicate.
